Overview:
The Republic of Kenya has been a flagship nation of democracy and economic strength in sub-Saharan Africa. Though it borders several unstable countries, Kenya has continued to prosper economically and enjoy relative stability. A December 2007 presidential election upset this reputation, and after the incumbent president Mwai Kibaki declared victory the party of the opposing candidate cited corruption and encouraged action. This sparked events of ethno political violence between two main tribes- the Kikuyu and the Luo, which over the course of a few months caused thousands of individuals to lose their lives, the displacement of hundreds of thousands, and the economic engines to ground to a standstill. With the upcoming election this year (2013) research is needed to understand if this election will yield the same results.
Project:
The Kenya Reconciliation Project, conducted by PPI Research Fellow Daniel Gluck, will explore the role that Kenyan churches have in being effective leaders to promote reconciliation. This research iwll consist of an in-country, intensive review of key issues and interviews with church leaders, pastoral staff, lay people, elders and community members. This study determines best methods for conflict resolution and reconciliation.
Bio:
Daniel has served in higher education leadership for 15 years, and is
currently the Director of Campus Ministries at William Jessup
University. Daniel has developed student leadership programs,
pioneered international mission programs and disciple students. Having
traveled to Kenya as a college student, his passion lies in
international development and reconciliation. Through the years, Daniel
has dedicated himself to researching methods of reconciliation and is
furthering his knowledge through an in-country assessment of
reconciliation methods churches can use in Western Kenya.
