Jonathan Kirkpatrick’s lecture “Bacchus in Narnia: C.S. Lewis and the Classics of Greece and Rome” will explore the impact of Lewis’s classical education and his love of some of the great works of Greek and Latin literature on his thought and writings.
Jonathan Kirkpatrick was born in southern England in the town of Guildford (birthplace of baseball). He studied Classics at Oxford, and recently completed a doctorate there; his thesis’s title was “Evidence for Pagan Cult in Roman Palestine.” For six years he worked for the CCCU’s study abroad program in Oxford as Junior Dean (Resident Director), and now he serves as Director of Studies in Classics and in the History of Art for that program. For the last three years he has been a Scholar in Residence at C.S. Lewis’s former home, the Kilns.
