The Sports Management Concentration provides strategic educational resources for sport and athletic institutional applications and operations, focusing specifically on leadership development for the current and future environment. The fully-online Master of Arts in Leadership, Sports Management concentration, is a flexible program which addresses the spiritual, cognitive, adaptive, and intuitive formation of the student.  Coursework within the concentration is tailored to specifically relate to the practical experiential applications of the student and current or future professional and personal development objectives.

LDRS500 Personal Life of the Leader (2 units)
This course equips students to serve effectively as reflective leaders. The course includes a comprehensive and holistic overview of factors inherent to the practice of Christian leadership as it pertains to one’s own mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health. The student identifies and strategically addresses some of their own personal areas for growth and wholeness.

LDRS501 Strategic Leadership Foundations (2 units)
This course explores key foundational leadership principles and theories, particularly related to strategic thinking and analysis. Students assess their own leadership proclivities in light of the course material, and develop specific, strategic “next steps” for themselves.

LDRS520 Organizational Communication (2 units)
This course guides students to understand the practices and theories associated with organizational communication. Students discover, analyze, assess, and discuss organizational communication principles that enhance both collegial relationships and workplace productivity.

LDRS540 Leadership Ethics (2 units)
This course provides a forum for analysis, assessment, and reflection on core ethical principles for sustainable and quality leadership in the marketplace today. Students identify various ethical models and assess their impact on a leadership culture.

This course teaches students how to evaluate leadership theories from historical and contemporary perspectives; analyze leadership styles from the most frequently used perspectives in business; investigate contemporary thinking on leadership and how leadership roles are changing in the 21st century; identify ways leadership in sport organizations can positively affect local and regional communities; develop leadership models for effective organizations; and formulate a personal and professional growth plan as a sport leader.

KINE 690 – Research Methods in Sport Management (2 units)
This course will teach students how to research and solve problems for entities or organizations. Students will be able to identify a problem, analyze the situation, suggest a research question, gather relevant information, interpret the information, and propose a solution.

KINE 582 – Sports Law (2 units)
This course will teach students about fundamental legal concepts relevant to tort law, contract law, and constitutional law; identify potential liability situations in the supervision, management and conduct of sport, recreation and physical activity (including situations regarding discrimination in terms of race, sex, and disability); and design and develop strategies for limiting liability.

KINE 583 – Financing Sport Organizations (2 units)
This course will teach students how to calculate profits and losses for sport organizations; track and graph financial trends of revenues and expenses; analyze revenues after factoring in inflation costs to determine adjusted profits or losses; and determine, evaluate, and report causes for trends and anomalies in the above.

KINE 584 – Strategic Marketing for Sport Organizations (2 unit)
This course will teach students how to develop a sound philosophy of marketing; understand the evolution of sport marketing theories; identify the major theories related to consumer behavior and market segmentation; identify contemporary issues and trends in sport marketing; increase competence of scientific inquiry in sport marketing; and create a marketing plan for a sport organization.

KINE 515 – Sports Media and Social Networking (2 units)
This course will teach students the role of print media (newspapers and magazines), electronic (radio, network television and cable television) and new media (Internet and related digital and social interactive technologies) in escalating the interest, coverage, and importance of big-time college and professional sport, as well as niche-market sport.

KINE 585 – Sport Operations and Event Management (2 units)
This course will teach students how to manage sport programs and events; identify characteristics of an effective organization; design practical management strategies; formulate effective communication processes; supervise personnel; and establish logistical plans including, site or equipment layouts, schedules and time lines, electronic communications and information systems, procedures for hospitality, housing, registration, transportation and financial disbursement, traffic flow and parking, restroom and waste facilities, and liaison with reporting and broadcast media, governing bodies, vendors, concessions, planning committees, and volunteers.

KINE 586 – Managing Human Resources in Sport Organizations (2 units)
This course teaches students how to develop a dynamic organizational culture through recruiting and selecting, orienting and training, evaluating and rewarding sport personnel. Students will be able to write job descriptions, conduct performance evaluations, demonstrate interpersonal communications, manage change, maintain positive morale, manage difficult employees, develop a system of rewards, manage stress, create diversity, and develop a collaborative/participative management style.

Philosophical Development (4 units)

KINE 516 – Social-cultural Basis for Sport (2 units)
This course will teach students how to analyze sport as a social construction in regard to its role, structure, formal organization, and professionalization; stratification, differentiation and norms along social class, age, race, ableism and gender.

KINE 517 – Sport Philosophy and Ethics (2 units)
This course teaches students how to discuss intelligently major issues in philosophy of sport, such as: What is sport? Is it at base a type of play? How does the pursuit of victory or the pursuit of bodily excellence affect the nature of athletic activity? What exactly is sportsmanship? Students will read some of the major authors in contemporary philosophy of sport and will be encouraged to state and defend an argument regarding their own view of philosophy of sport and sport ethics.

Q: What can I do with a Master of Arts in Leadership – Sports Management?
A: Careers in sports management are varied and require different levels of education and experience. The opportunities that exist in sports management include everything from coaching/managing teams to event management to sports venue management to recreation management. Competitive candidates for some of these positions will need backgrounds or education in business and finance, law and marketing. A sports management degree from Jessup can provide this background and is geared specifically towards those that are interested in pursuing sports management careers.

Q: How long will it take to complete?
A: Because we offer the Master’s in Leadership online, students can complete the degree in two years, by taking six units in the Spring, Summer, and Fall each year.

Q: What is the cost of tuition?
A: The MAL (Sports Management Concentration) costs $14,940; $415 per unit.

Q: Is there financial aid available?
A: Yes. Government loans are available to qualified individuals who complete the FAFSA and are enrolled in a minimum of three units per semester.

Q: Are there any scholarship funds available?
A: The University has several endowed scholarships, ranging from $500-$5,000, available specifically for ministry students. Applications are available during the spring semester and funds for successful applicants become available the following fall semester.

Q: How many units am I required to take each semester?
A: You determine your own pace in the program but must take at least 3 units each semester to receive government aid.

Q: How many units is each course?
A: Two units.

Q: How long is each course?
A: Each course runs for seven weeks.

Q: Do I need to be online at a specific time each week?
A: No. You may complete your work at times that are convenient for you. However, the courses are designed for extensive interaction between you and other students and the instructors.

Q: How much homework will there be each week?
A: Courses are designed for 10 – 12 hours per week of work. Some students may work more quickly. Others may require additional time.Q: Will I be required to do group work?A: Groups assignments are not the norm. However, every course expects you to participate in online discussions four days each week.
